course goal| Special Studies in Interior Design | In my final semester of undergrad, I sought to broaden my design perspectives by delving into architectural design alongside interior design within the context of a design competition environment. Motivated to refine my proficiency in Revit, I embarked on an exploration of form development to elevate the intricacies of interior elements.
Concept Statement
The role of hospice care in providing the proper care, comfort, and quality of life for an ill individual who is approaching the end of life is a delicate and significant one. Grace Care Home creates an inviting and comforting environment for children and families facing end-of-life care, using the symbolism of trees, branches, the surrounding swamp environment to create a space that celebrates life and the significance of home. The building form marries a curved form and sloped roof, an homage to the familiar character of a traditional home, to gracefully balance tradition and modernity within its natural surroundings. Expansive panels of glass envelope the entire structure to bathe the interior in an abundance of daylight and views of nature. Seamless transition of open spaces and 360-degree circulation promotes a sense of interconnectedness and exploration. The design incorporates muted tones of sage green and blue with natural elements of the surrounding swamp to envelope the visitors within the landscape to create a calming and serene atmosphere. Design elements focus on creating memories, familiarity, connecting with nature, fostering relationships, and facilitating creativity. The materiality of the design evolves to foster sustainable principles while embracing themes such as the cycle of life and death with mainly wood. Through the use of natural materials, organic forms, and interactive spaces, visitors will engage with the space in a personal and uplifting way, creating a lasting connection to their memories and loved ones.
Site Context
Nestled in the heart of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, this site offers a distinctive urban oasis. Enveloped by lush swamp and native foliage, it seamlessly merges with its natural surroundings. With medical facilities within a 5-mile radius, the center ensures prompt access to care for children facing terminal illnesses.
Concept Development
Drawing inspiration from nature, I integrated architectural elements reminiscent of the native bald cypress tree's lines into the columns. The pitched roof symbolizes traditional homes, while a skylight at the apex fosters a connection between earth and sky. Floor-to-ceiling storefront systems offer a 360-degree view, promoting mental well-being. Reflecting an ethos of openness, the floor plan eschews room boundaries, encouraging visitors to connect and move seamlessly between activities.
